Job Purpose:
The Coast Explorer Internship Programme offers a unique opportunity to gain skills, knowledge and on-the-job experience across a variety of organisations working at the cutting edge in the marine environment. Each partner organisation provides opportunities for the intern to develop skills in specialist areas including, marine conservation, climate change, renewable energy, social sustainability, seabed leasing and marine planning.
This internship programme is funded by The Crown Estate and project managed by Adonis Blue Environmental Consultants (part of the Kent Wildlife Trust Group). The programme is run as a partnership with The Crown Estate, Adonis Blue Environmental Consultants, Vattenfall and Canterbury City Council. The interns will get the chance to undertake a research project focusing broadly on either elasmobranch distribution in Kent or coastal birds as indicators of habitat health in Kent. Within the internship, the intern will be encouraged to develop their interpersonal and networking skills to understand more about the wide range of stakeholders and organisations we work with. Following initial introductions via project partners to the wider industry, the intern will have the opportunity both at conferences, online meetings and events to develop their stakeholder relations and develop the essential communication and engagement skills for pursuing a career in the sector. There will also be opportunities for the intern to develop a range of practical skills and specialist knowledge in areas of their own choice, which can include public communications and outreach, marine planning and policy, ecological surveys, running events and activities, technical skills, academic research and much more.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Undertake one independent research project for the partner organisations.
- Communicate the outcomes and recommendations from the research project through a written report and oral presentation for all partner organisations and relevant stakeholders.
- Gain an understanding of careers relating to the marine sector.
- Improve knowledge of renewable energy developments, their associated environmental, social and economic considerations.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the environmental issues facing UK coasts and seas, especially the South East coast.
- Assist the Crown Estate, Adonis Blue Environmental Consultants, Vattenfall and Canterbury City Council with the delivery of key marine tasks and projects.
- Gain scientific survey and GIS experience alongside the partner organisations.
- Deliver marine awareness and educational outreach alongside the partner organisations.
- Develop an understanding of office and remote working, attending meetings, working with a variety of teams across organisations, and building a network of contacts in the marine sector.
